What is Scraping Therapy (IASTM)?
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), commonly known as "Scraping," is a specialized myofascial treatment. While hands-on massage is effective for general tension, IASTM utilizes ergonomically designed medical-grade stainless steel tools to detect and treat specific areas of soft tissue restriction.
By gliding these smooth-edged instruments over the skin, our clinicians can identify "grittiness" or adhesions in the fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles—that are often the root cause of chronic pain and limited range of motion.
How the "Scraping" Process Works
The goal of IASTM is to create a localized, controlled inflammatory response. This might sound counterintuitive, but it is a vital step in "restarting" the body's healing process:
- Breaking Up Adhesions: The tools effectively "comb through" scar tissue and densified fascia, breaking down the internal "fuzz" that causes muscles to stick together.
- Neurological Reset: The sensation of the tool sends signals to the nervous system to relax the guarded muscle, providing immediate relief from tightness.
- Stimulating Collagen Production: The micro-friction encourages the body to lay down new, healthy collagen fibers, which are the building blocks of strong, flexible tendons and ligaments.
- Revascularization: It draws fresh blood to areas with poor circulation (like tendons), providing the oxygen and nutrients necessary for repair.
Why It’s a Game Changer for Chiropractic Patients
When a joint is misaligned, the surrounding muscles often tighten or develop scar tissue as a defense mechanism. By incorporating Scraping Therapy into your care plan, we address the "soft tissue memory" that often pulls your spine back out of alignment.
Common Conditions Treated:
Condition How IASTM Helps
Plantar Fasciitis - Breaks down the thick, painful adhesions in the arch of the foot.
Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow - Stimulates healing in the poorly vascularized tendons of the arm.
Carpal Tunnel - Releases the tight ligaments in the wrist to reduce nerve pressure.
Neck & Shoulder Pain - Melts away the "knots" caused by poor posture or "tech neck."
Post-Surgical Scar Tissue - Smooths out surgical scars to improve skin and muscle elasticity.
What to Expect During Treatment
During a session, a specialized lubricant is applied to the skin to allow the tool to glide comfortably. You may feel a "gravelly" sensation as the tool passes over areas of tension—this is the instrument interacting with the adhesions.
The Result: Most patients report an immediate increase in flexibility and a significant reduction in pain following their first treatment. While some temporary redness (petechiae) may occur, this is a positive sign that blood flow has been restored to the area.
